Was the Sound of Music based on Maria Von Trapp?

The Sound of Music was based on the memoirs of Maria Augusta von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The musical followed the story of the Trapp family, an Austrian family who became well-known singers in the 1930s and 1940s. The musical was adapted from the book into a Broadway show in 1959, and then into a film in 1965.
