Was Bach better known as a performer or composer during his life?

Johann Sebastian Bach was renowned primarily as a performer during his lifetime. Although he was prolific composer, producing masterworks that are now considered some of the greatest examples of music, contemporary recognition for these compositions was relatively limited. While he was celebrated as a brilliant organist and virtuoso violinist, his reputation as a composer only began to flourish posthumously during the 19th century.
