What was position at the court in Vienna?

Joseph Haydn's position at the court in Vienna was Kapellmeister, or music director.

From 1766 until his death in 1809, Haydn was employed as Kapellmeister (music director) to the wealthy Esterházy family, who were major patrons of music. He spent most of his career in the service of the Esterházy family, first at their Schloss Esterházy in Eisenstadt and later at their palace in Esterház. As Kapellmeister, Haydn was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the musical establishment, including the composition and performance of music, the hiring and firing of musicians, and the organization of concerts. He also composed many of his most famous works during this time, including the "Surprise" Symphony, the "Clock" Symphony, and the "Creation" oratorio.
