What are the four sections of a big band?

1. Saxophone section

- composed of 4 - 6 saxophone players

- usually divided into 2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor saxophones, and a baritone saxophone

2. Trumpet section

- composed of 4 - 5 trumpet players

- usually divided into 1 lead trumpet, 3 mid-range trumpets, and a 4th trumpet for low notes

3. Trombone section

- composed of 4 - 5 trombone players

- usually divided into 2 tenor trombones, 1 bass trombone, and 1 valve trombone

4. Rhythm section

- composed of piano, bass, drum kit and guitar

- responsible for providing the rhythmic accompaniment to the other sections
