What year was the first guitar played?

The first stringed instrument resembling a guitar was invented by the Persians sometime after 3500 BC. The first four-string guitars began to appear in Spain early in the 16th century, and the five-string guitar was developed by the middle of the 18th century. This form of the guitar was then taken to Mexico and other parts of the Americas by the Spanish conquistadors.
