Joseph Alessi is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest trombonists. He has been the principal trombonist of the New York Philharmonic since 1985 and has performed as a soloist with orchestras around the world. He is also a professor at The Juilliard School and a Yamaha Performing Artist.
Alessi was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1958. He began playing the trombone at the age of 10 and quickly showed exceptional talent. He studied at the University of Michigan and the Eastman School of Music, where he earned a master’s degree in trombone performance.
After graduating from Eastman, Alessi joined the brass quintet Empire Brass. He toured with the group for three years before becoming the principal trombonist of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 1981. In 1985, he joined the New York Philharmonic.
Alessi has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has also recorded numerous albums, both as a soloist and with the New York Philharmonic.
Alessi is a highly respected teacher and has given master classes at music schools around the world. He is also the author of several books on trombone playing, including “Joseph Alessi: Life, Lessons, and the Art of the Trombone” and “The Trombonist’s Guide to the Orchestra.”
Alessi is a Yamaha Performing Artist and plays Yamaha trombones. He is also an endorsee of the Denis Wick trombone mouthpieces.
