When was the Upright Piano invented?

The upright piano, also known as a console or vertical piano, was first invented in the late 18th century. The earliest known examples were made around 1795 by two Germans, Johann Christoph Zumpe and Johann Schmahl, who worked independently of each other. Zumpe's square piano, exhibited in London, consisted of a tall vertical case containing the strings and a horizontal soundboard. Schmahl's "Giraffe" piano, featured a triangular case with the soundboard placed diagonally within.
