Did the viola evolve from a different instrument?

The viola developed alongside, not from, other bowed string instruments such as the fiddle and rebec during the 15th and 16th centuries. It is closely related to the violin and shares historical ancestors (like the vielle or medieval fiddle), but did not directly evolve from any single, older bowed string instrument.
