What is a woodwind instrument?
A woodwind instrument is a musical instrument that produces its sound primarily by the vibration of a single reed, double reed, or an edge against a sharp opening. The sound of a woodwind instrument is produced when the player blows air across a mouthpiece, causing the reed or edge to vibrate. This vibration creates a pulse of air that travels through the instrument's body and is amplified by the shape and size of the instrument.
These instruments are generally made of wood, but there are exceptions, such as the saxophone and flute. Some common examples of woodwind instruments include the clarinet, flute, oboe, saxophone, and bassoon.
