The English horn, also known as cor anglais, is a double-reed woodwind instrument in the oboe family. It is pitched in F, a fifth lower than the oboe, and has a distinctive, mellow, and slightly reedy tone.
Invention
The English horn was invented in the 1720s by an instrument maker named Johann Christoph Denner in Nuremberg, Germany. It was originally developed as an alto oboe, and its name is derived from the French term "cor anglais", which means "English horn". However, there is no clear connection between the instrument and England.
