The next morning, Stevie woke up early and went to the kitchen to make breakfast. She was surprised to see that Pete was already there, sitting at the table and reading the newspaper.
"Good morning, Pete," she said. "I didn't expect to see you up so early."
"I couldn't sleep," he said. "I've been thinking about everything that happened last night."
"Me too," said Stevie. "I can't believe that we saw a real ghost."
"I know," said Pete. "It was incredible."
They both fell silent, lost in their thoughts.
After a while, Stevie said, "I guess we should probably tell someone about this."
"Who would we tell?" asked Pete. "Our parents? They wouldn't believe us."
"Maybe we could tell the police," said Stevie.
"But what would we tell them?" asked Pete. "They'd think we're crazy."
"I don't know," said Stevie. "But I think we have to tell someone."
Pete nodded. "I guess you're right," he said. "We'll tell the police."
They finished eating breakfast and then went to the police station. They told the officer on duty what had happened the night before. The officer listened to their story without saying anything.
When they were finished, the officer said, "I'm going to have to bring you both in for questioning."
Stevie and Pete were shocked. "But why?" asked Stevie.
"Because this is a very serious matter," said the officer. "I need to make sure that you're not making this up."
Stevie and Pete were taken to separate interrogation rooms. Stevie was questioned for over an hour. The officer asked her about everything that had happened the night before, in great detail. Stevie answered all of the officer's questions honestly.
When the questioning was over, the officer said, "Thank you for your cooperation. I'm going to let you go now."
Stevie was relieved. She was glad that she had been able to tell the police what had happened.
She left the police station and went home. She found Pete waiting for her on the front porch.
"What happened?" he asked.
"They let me go," said Stevie. "They're going to investigate what happened."
"I'm glad," said Pete. "I was worried about you."
"I'm fine," said Stevie. "I just want to forget about all of this."
"Me too," said Pete.
They went inside and watched TV for the rest of the day. They tried not to think about what had happened the night before.
But it was hard to forget. Every time they closed their eyes, they could see the ghost's face. They could hear her screams.
They knew that they would never forget what had happened that night.
