How to Clean Hammond Organ Amplifier Tube Sockets

Older Hammond organs don't use transistors for amplification -- they use vacuum tubes. Vacuum tubes are designed to be replaced periodically and to be removed. Because of this, the tubes aren't soldered in place, and their sockets are loose enough that dirt or other detritus can accumulate. Periodically cleaning out the sockets will help to keep your organ operating properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Dry cleaning solvent

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Hammond organ from the wall. Allow it to sit at least five minutes so that the tubes can cool.

    • 2

Move your hand towards the tube that you want to remove for socket cleaning. If the tube feels warm, do not touch it. Moving a warm tube can damage it. Wait for it to cool down.

    • 3

Lift the tube directly out of its socket.

    • 4

Moisten your camel hair brush with a small amount of solvent.

    • 5

Brush the socket out. The solvent will help you remove dirt and dust from the socket.

    • 6

Allow the socket to dry and replace the tube by pressing it down firmly into the socket. You can clean multiple sockets while you are waiting for their counterparts to dry.
