How many keys did a bassoon have when it was first made?

The bassoon did not have any keys when it was first made. The earliest bassoons, known as dulcians, appeared in the 16th century and had no keys or other mechanisms to facilitate playing different notes. Over time, keys were gradually added to the bassoon to improve its playability and extend its range, with the first keyed bassoons emerging in the early 18th century.
