How does a drum make sound?

When you hit a drum, you cause the drumhead to vibrate. This vibration creates sound waves, which are mechanical waves that travel through the air. We hear sound when these waves reach our ears and cause our eardrums to vibrate.

The pitch of a drum sound depends on the size and tension of the drumhead. A larger drumhead will produce a lower pitch than a smaller drumhead. A tighter drumhead will produce a higher pitch than a looser drumhead.

The timbre of a drum sound depends on the materials used to make the drumhead and the body of the drum. Different materials will produce different sounds. For example, a drumhead made of animal skin will produce a different sound than a drumhead made of plastic.

The shape of the drum body also affects the sound. A round drum will produce a different sound than a square drum.
