What did the shawm sound like?

The shawm sounded similar to an oboe with an extra 'buzz'; like an oboe and a trombone had been crossed. The louder instruments that descended from it are the English bassoon and the sackbut (ancestor of the trombone). It made use of a double-reed instrument with a conical tube. Shaums came in varying pitches.
