Who is Bruce Jacob in Gideons trumpet?

In the real-life Gideon's Trumpet case, there was no person named Bruce Jacob. The protagonist in both the book and film adaptation is named Clarence Earl Gideon—although, as Gideon's Trumpet makes clear, "Gideon" was in fact Gideon's middle name rather than his first.
