Materials Needed:
- Cardboard boxes (various sizes)
- Thick paper or cardstock
- Scissors
- Tape
- Markers
- Rubber bands
- Spoons or wooden dowels
- Plastic containers
- Rice, popcorn kernels, or beads
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cardboard Boxes:
- Use different-sized cardboard boxes for the drums: kick drum, snare drum, and a couple of toms.
2. Decorate the Boxes:
- Cover the boxes with thick paper or cardstock.
- Use markers to add creative designs and drum patterns.
3. Create Drum Heads:
- Cut out circles from the cardstock slightly larger than the openings of the boxes.
- Tape the cardstock circles to the box openings to create the drum heads.
4. Add Tension to the Drum Heads:
- Stretch rubber bands around the edges of the drum heads to tighten them and create tension.
5. Make Drumsticks:
- Use the spoons or wooden dowels as drumsticks. You can decorate them as well.
6. Create Cymbals:
- Cut out large circles from the cardstock for the cymbals.
- Tape a smaller circle of cardstock in the center of each cymbal to create a clanging sound.
7. Build the Kick Drum:
- Take a large cardboard box, preferably tall and rectangular, for the kick drum.
- Cut out a small hole on the front side of the box near the bottom for the beater (a spoon or dowel).
- Insert the beater through the hole and secure it with tape.
8. Fill the Drums:
- To create different sounds, fill the drums with different materials. For example, you can use rice for a high-pitched sound, popcorn kernels for a medium-pitched sound, and beads for a low-pitched sound.
9. Assemble the Drum Set:
- Arrange the drums and cymbals on the floor or a suitable surface.
- Position the kick drum in the center, with the snare drum and toms in front. Place the cymbals to one side.
Now, you have your homemade drum set! You can rock out and create your own beats using the rubber-band drums and the spoons or dowels as drumsticks. Enjoy making music!
