Did the modern-day version of piano have a predecessor?

Yes, the modern-day piano has a predecessor known as the harpsichord. The harpsichord was a popular keyboard instrument during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, from the 14th to the 18th centuries. It produced sound by plucking strings with quills or leather plectra when the keys were pressed. The harpsichord had a much lighter and more delicate sound compared to the modern piano. It was often used for accompanying vocal and instrumental music, as well as for solo performances. The development of the piano, which incorporated hammers that struck the strings instead of plucking them, led to the gradual decline of the harpsichord's popularity.
