Why is there only 1 tuba in an orchestra?

This is not accurate, there are usually multiple tubas in an orchestra, depending on the size and composition of the orchestra. Large symphony orchestras often have 2-4 tubas, while smaller orchestras or chamber ensembles might only have 1 tuba.
