Why would a drummer hit the drum near edge to make sound of give note lower pitch?

Drummers do not hit the drum near the edge to produce a lower-pitched sound or note. In fact, hitting the drum near the edge generally results in a higher-pitched sound. The pitch of a drum sound is primarily determined by the tension of the drumhead and the size of the drum. Hitting the drum in different areas (such as the center or the edge) can affect the timbre and tone of the sound, but it does not significantly alter the pitch.
