Yamaha serial numbers are five digits and begin with the digit 1 or 2. They represent the chronological number of instruments produced of a particular model at a particular year and time. For example:

1. S/N Starting with "140-10000" or "141-10000" are french horns made in the 1940s.

2. S/N Starting with "145" or "146" are french horns made in the 1950s.

3. S/N Starting with "185" or "186" are french horns made in the 1960s.
