What is musical context of cordillera?

Cordillera refers to a musical style from the Andean regions of Chile. The music that developed there has pre-Columbian, Spanish musical, Mapuche traditions. The indigenous communities living in mountainous highlands, valleys, lowlands use traditional musical instrument like charango, quena, zampona to perform folk style and music. Some examples include cueca, tonada, villancico and more. Some other genres popular and known internationally also exist like Nueva, Nueva Canción Chilena. Each area in the regions contribute something new in terms of instruments with charango playing significant, with music having fast pace, dance oriented nature for some. The lyrics generally include topics relating to the society, daily working activities or experiences, while there were religious influenced lyrics used also, especially around Christmas-New Year periods known as Misa de Aguinaldo, having influence as part of Spanish heritage as well.
