Philadelphia Alternative Rock Radio Stations

There are four primary rock or alternative rock stations available for listening on the FM dial in Philadelphia. According to Arbitron, a leading collector of market data and radio rankings, Philadelphia ranks as the No. 8 radio market in the United States with a population of nearly 4.4 million persons age 12-plus as of spring 2010.



Allmusic describes alternative rock as a genre of music used as a catch-all term for post-grunge music, beginning in the late 1980s and running through the 1990s. More often it refers to rock bands that are not typically mainstream. While not all rock stations play alternative rock, especially as much as those dedicating their playlist to the genre, most stations are good sources for popular alternative hits.

  1. WRFF 104.5 FM

    • WRFF 104.5 FM is typically the most listened-to rock station devoted to alternative music in the Philadelphia market. As of June 2010, Arbitron listed WRFF as No. 11 in the market with a 3.7 rating.     WXPN 88.5 FM

    • WXPN, home to Y-Rock, ranked as the No. 22 station in Philadelphia as of June 2010. Y-Rock's website contains a 24-7 online stream and also podcasts of daily programming. Y-Rock began after the demise of WPLY / Y100 (100..3 FM), which for 12 years was the alternative rock station in Philadelphia.
