What does LP stand for in terms of music?

LP stands for "long play." It is a term used to describe a vinyl record that plays at 33⅓ revolutions per minute (RPM). LPs were introduced in 1948 and quickly became the standard format for recorded music. They remained the most popular format until the 1980s, when they were gradually replaced by CDs.

LPs are typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a type of plastic. They are typically 12 inches in diameter and have a playing time of about 20-30 minutes per side. LPs can be monaural (single-channel) or stereo (two-channel).

The term "LP" is sometimes used to refer to a long-playing record in general, regardless of its format. However, it is most commonly used to refer to vinyl LPs.
