What is a reggae skank?

In reggae music, a skank is a syncopated guitar rhythm which is one of the most recognisable elements of the genre. It is most commonly associated with the upstroke (on the beat), mute, downstroke (off the beat), mute sequence. Some reggae players also add what is called a chicken scratch by adding staccato triplets during the first beat.
