Why did Gospel music originate?

The exact time when Gospel music originated is not known. In the 18 century, African slaves in the United States transformed European Christian music. They took the European melody and transformed it to African style, which incorporated call-and-response technique, improvisation, use of syncopated rhythms, blues and lively dance feel. This then gave way to Gospel music.
