What kind of animals were the animaniacs?

The Animaniacs are a group of cartoon characters created by Tom Ruegger and produced by Amblin Entertainment. The characters consist of the Warner Brothers, Yakko and Wakko, and their sister Dot, as well as Pinky and the Brain, and Slappy Squirrel. The Animaniacs are all anthropomorphic animals, but their exact species is never specified.
