Motown Records was founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy Jr. in Detroit, Michigan. The label quickly became known for its distinctive sound, which was characterized by its use of catchy melodies, memorable hooks, and soulful vocals. Motown Records launched the careers of some of the most iconic musicians of all time, including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, and The Jackson 5.
Motown Records celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019 with a series of events and releases, including the release of a 10-CD box set of the label's greatest hits. The label is planning to celebrate its 65th anniversary in 2023 with a similar series of events and releases.
