How to Create a New Song

Writing a new song can be a very rewarding experience for a band or artist. A song can be used to express many feelings, from sadness to joy, and can be very simple or complicated rhythmically, as well as vocally. By constructing a song with the instruments and band members you work with, you can create a brand new song for you and your listeners' enjoyment.

Instructions

    • 1

Create the drum tracks. Whether you are in a band or a solo artist, it is helpful to have a drum beat that you can use to create a new song. The drum beat may spark an idea and help create the melody for the song.

Create the melody and rhythm of the song. Since the beat may start off basic, the guitar or keyboard melody may take the song in a totally different direction. Experiment with structure and be sure to include a few verses and choruses to create a new song. The melody or rhythm can be very simple comprised of only a few notes or complicated and in an odd time signature--there are no boundaries in song creation.

Write the bass line to bridge the drums and guitar or keyboard. Bass guitar is often used as an in-between instrument to connect the drums and guitar. Bassists play in different styles, so have the bass player come up with something or write your own bass line to compliment your melody.

Write the vocal melody. The vocals will be the most recognizable part of the new song, so create patterns and melodies that fit with the feel of the song. You do not need any lyrics to start, but the creation of a suitable melody is very important. Bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones made simple songs great with memorable vocal melodies.

Write the lyrics. Catchy phrases and simple sing-along choruses can be written to create hit songs. Deeper, more emotive lyrics can also be written as an outlet for the artists. Modern emo bands use their lyrics to express hurt and despair in their daily lives and pop artists often sing about lighthearted topics for easy digestion by the masses.
