How to Create an Indie Song

An indie song is a song independently written and produced, either by the artist or a music production company that is not considered one of the major labels. The term has evolved through the years, blurring the lines between mainstream and independent. Creating a true indie song is a combination of writing, producing and marketing the song yourself or through a record label that may be small, with little budget for the marketing process. Creating independent music can be an option for musicians who prefer to avoid the pitfalls and frustrations of the mainstream music industry.

Instructions

Write your own material or collaborate with band members. Indie songs are often simple, taking on the characteristics of electric folk with a modern twist. Write lyrics that either take on social and political issues or lyrics that address romantic issues sincerely. Indie music is often emotional, both recorded and live. There are no specific rules about what types of songs you can write, but songs that can be easily strummed on guitar with a memorable chorus are characteristics of a good indie song. Write songs primarily for guitar, bass, keyboards and drums.

Record the song yourself. Whether you purchase a mixing board and microphone and record straight to tape, use audio software like Pro Tools, or rent time in a professional recording studio, recording the song yourself is essential to creating an independent song. If you have a band, bring them in to help with the recording process. Choose a member to produce the music, meaning that person will determine how the recording will sound.

Market your music. Part of creating an indie song is bringing it to life in the music marketplace. Independent music is often marketed on a slim budget. Burn your own CDs and take them with you to any show you perform. Selling your CDs at your performances at discounted prices can help generate word of mouth surrounding your band. Visit music stores and inquire about placing a small display of your CDs in the store. Chain music stores are not typically open to this, but smaller, independently-run stores might be.
