How to Purchase the Rights to Use Copyrighted Music

Whether you want to use a song in a movie or want to cover it on your next album, you'll need to know how to purchase the rights to use copyrighted music. Music publishing companies own the copyrights to songs, and you need to obtain permission and pay a fee in order to obtain licensing rights. You can purchase the rights to use copyrighted music by locating the correct publisher and negotiating a contract.

      2) Search the database of a performing rights organization such as ASCAP (ascap.com) or BMI (bmi.com).
