Teach pupils about all genres of music from classical and folk music, to rock and hip hop. Also teach them about music from around the world and how different types of music often have a common source. An example of the latter is the blues, which has influenced music genres ranging from jazz to rock 'n' roll.
Encourage the class to learn to play musical instruments. Some pupils will be able to learn to play a variety of instruments and pick up new skills with alacrity. Others may struggle until they find the right instrument, but then will show great flair. Also, arrange the class into groups and encourage pupils to write and record their own music and songs with the aid of computer software.
Use DVDs to show music performances and also bring music along for the class to hear. Ask the class to write down which artist and what music impressed them the most and why. Then, ask the pupils to write about their favorite music artists. Writing about a music artist a pupil likes is an ideal way to get them to display their enthusiasm for music.
Arrange musical productions. These can range from small productions to something on a larger scale. The music can be either from a show or the pupil's own musical compositions. Some pupils, who may have seemed reticent in expressing themselves in a class, can be transformed when given the chance to perform. Vary the parts of the performers in rehearsals, by changing the chorus and lead parts around. You may end up being surprised as to who are the most impressive performers.
