    • 1

Learn the music staff structure beginning with the lines and spaces. Using your music staff paper, number the lines and spaces of the top staff from bottom to top. Number the lines from 1 through 5 using your pencil. Number 1 will be the bottom line and number 5 will be the top line. Number the spaces between the 5 lines, numbering 1 through 4 from the bottom space to the top space.

Prepare the staff paper by drawing a bass clef sign on each staff. Review the names of the bass clef lines and spaces. Practice memory devices for the lines and spaces. Try "Great Big Dogs Fight Animals" for the lines, and "All Cows Eat Grass" for the spaces. Write the first letters of each word in the "line" sentence and "space" sentence on the lines and spaces of the staff. Erase and re-space overlapping letters.

    • 3

Practice drawing flats on the lines and in the spaces of your staff paper. Learn the proper order for the flat key signatures. Use the memory device: "BEAD Gum Candy Fruit". Remember that the order of flats begins with one flat (B) and adds one more for each key signature (B and E, etc.). Use prepared key signature charts to review the correct flat placement on the lines and spaces of the staff.

Practice drawing sharps on the lines and in the spaces of your staff paper. Learn the proper order for the sharp key signatures. Use the memory device: "Fat Cats Go Down Alleys Eating Bologna." Remember that the order of sharps begins with one sharp (F) and adds one more for each key signature (F and C, etc.). Use prepared key signature charts to review the correct sharp placement on the lines and spaces of the staff.
