How to Toughen Your Finger Pads for the Guitar

One of the most difficult aspects of learning to play the guitar is the pain that shoots through the fingertips. When beginning guitarists finger notes on the fretboard, the fingertips become raw and, although callouses develop over time, the process can be problematic. Some find it difficult to endure the pain and can be discouraged from playing. But, once the pain is gone, learning to play the guitar can be a rewarding experience. To speed up the process, a few simple techniques can strengthen achy fingertips.

Instructions

    • 1

Play chords and notes daily for at least 15 minutes. It's best not to play for long periods of time before callouses have formed. Listen to your body -- if the pain becomes too great, try again the next day.

    • 2

Use your thumbnail to press into each fingertip when you're not playing. Rub back and forth to help callouses form.

    • 3

Use light-gauge, medium-gauge or silk-metal strings that won't cut into your fingers as much as heavier strings.

    • 4

Wear gloves when you wash dishes or clean with chemicals, which can undo the formation of callouses.
