The Political-Military Group (POLMIL) was established on 15 February 1993, as part of a broader effort to transform the United Nations Secretariat's security and peacemaking mechanisms in the post-Cold War era. The group was originally known as the Office of Political-Military Affairs, and was renamed in 2007.
POLMIL's mandate is to provide political analysis and advice on security and military issues to the Secretary-General, the Security Council, and other UN bodies. The group also works closely with other UN entities, such as the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Department of Field Support, and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, to ensure a coordinated approach to security and peacemaking efforts.
POLMIL's work is divided into three main areas:
* Political analysis: POLMIL monitors and analyzes political and security developments around the world, and provides assessments of the potential risks and challenges to international peace and security.
* Policy development: POLMIL works with other UN bodies to develop policies and strategies for addressing security and peacemaking challenges.
* Advocacy: POLMIL advocates for the implementation of UN policies and strategies, and works to build support for international peace and security efforts.
POLMIL has played an important role in a number of UN peacemaking efforts, including the interventions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone. The group also provides support to the UN's peacekeeping operations around the world.
POLMIL is a small group, with only about 20 staff members. However, it plays a vital role in the UN's efforts to promote international peace and security.
