Operation Overlord: This was the codename for the overall invasion of Normandy, France. The Allies planned to land troops on five beaches along the Normandy coast: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.
Land by Sea and Air: The Allies planned to land troops by sea and air. Airborne forces would drop behind the enemy lines to clear obstacles and secure key areas. Amphibious forces would launch from British and American warships and land on the beaches under heavy German artillery fire.
Establish Beachheads: The first objective of the invasion was to establish beachheads by securing and expanding the landing areas. This would allow additional troops and supplies to be brought in.
Link Up and Advance: Once the beachheads were secured, the Allied forces would link up and begin advancing inland. Their objective was to capture the important city of Caen, which was located several kilometers from the coast. Caen served as a critical transportation and communication hub for the German forces.
Expand the Offensive: The invasion of Normandy was just the first phase of the Allied plans. Subsequent operations would aim to expand the offensive and liberate the rest of France, as well as other occupied countries in Western Europe.
