What background did most of the soldiers come from in American Civil War?

Most of the soldiers who fought in the American Civil War came from rural farming communities. In the Northern states, many soldiers were immigrants or the sons of immigrants from Europe. In the Southern states, most soldiers were white farmers, although some were also slaves or free black men.
