How to Hold a Sousaphone & Position the Bell

As a marching band takes the field, people in the stands may be most impressed by the large brass instruments known as sousaphones. The sousaphone was invented by composer and bandleader John Philip Sousa. Its large, forward-facing bell and low tone make it a better choice for marching than the cumbersome tuba. Holding a sousaphone correctly puts the bell at its ideal position.

Instructions

    • 1

Put your head and right arm through the sousaphone's center opening.

    • 2

Rest the sousaphone on your left shoulder for support and place your left hand on the bottom of the instrument for additional support.

    • 3

Adjust the sousaphone's position on your shoulder until the bell is directly above your head, facing forward, and the tubing leading to the bell is behind your neck.

    • 4

Place the index, middle and ring fingers of your right hand on the three valves.

    • 5

Bring your lips to the mouthpiece to begin playing the instrument.
