Being a professional musician can be a fun and rewarding career choice. While many people are aware of musical careers such as teaching and playing in an orchestra, there are many other ways that musicians can make a living in their field. By learning what possibilities there are for a performing musician, you can be better prepared when you decide to pursue your chosen field.
  1. Soloist

    • Solo musicians can make a living as singer/songrwriters, soloist with an orchestra or jazz band, or as the featured artists in any other musical situations.

    Ensemble Musician

    • Musicians can make a career out of playing in large ensembles such as jazz big bands, orchestras or concert bands.

    Session Musician

    • Session musicians work in recording studios where they record backing tracks for singers, TV and radio commercials, and movie soundtracks.

    Freelance Musician

    • Freelance musicians make a living by performing in many different situations, including recording studios, touring as part of a band, and playing local clubs and halls.

    Pit Musician

    • Musicians can also make a living by performing in pit orchestras during plays, musicals and other live events.
