How to Use a Third Mackie Speaker As a Monitor

Mackie speakers make great monitors because of their ease of portability and setup. Setting up a third speaker as a monitor requires the use of a mixer with auxiliary outputs. If you have three Mackie speakers and a mixer, you can setup the third as a monitor quite easily. When putting your three speaker system together, remember to turn on the mixer before the speakers. When powering down the system, it is important to turn off the speakers before turning off the mixer. This will reduce popping and damage to your speakers.

Instructions

  1. Setting Up A Monitor

    • 1

Connect the two main output speakers to the left and right output channels of the mixing console.

    • 2

Connect the third speaker that will be used as a monitor to the auxiliary one output. This will often be marked "AUX 1" on the mixer and labeled on the connections on the back of the mixer. You might need a 1/4-inch TRS to XLR adapter to make this connection.

    • 3

Turn on the mixer once you have your speakers and sound source (microphone, CD player, instrument) connected. Turn on the speakers.

    • 4

Set the output levels for the sound source to your main outputs by speaking into the microphone or playing the CD or instrument.

    • 5

Find the "AUX 1" main send in the main mixing sub of the mixer. This is most often somewhere near the upper right corner or right side of the mixing console. Set a reference level just below 0dB for sound check.

    • 6

Find the "AUX 1" channel send in the channel of your sound source. This is most often above the EQ potentiometers of the channel strip.

    • 7

Adjust this knob until you hear it in your third monitor speaker. You may need to adjust the auxiliary send up and down to achieve an appropriate monitor level.
