Cool Stage Lighting Effects

A stage show is made up of the performance by the talent and the production used around the performers. A major part of that production is lighting. There is a practical part to lighting up a stage so that people can see the performance, and there are cool stage lighting effects that can be used to make the performance memorable. Lighting effects can be achieved using standard lighting moved to different angles, or it can be done with lights specifically designed to create a cool effect.
  1. Silhouettes

    • Silhouettes add a nice effect to any performance, and they are not expensive to create. Mark a point on the stage where the performer should stand and aim a white light so that it hits the performer between the shoulder blades. When you turn off the front lights and hit the silhouette light, the effect is interesting for the audience.

    Monster Face

    • Many people are familiar with the practice of using a flashlight to create a scary face while telling ghost stories. This effect works on stage, as well. Place a standard stage PAR can on the floor of the stage, pointing straight up. According to Theatre FX, a PAR can is a standard lighting fixture that traditionally uses a 300-watt or 500-watt bulb to illuminate part of a stage. PAR cans are mounted to a stand or a truss, and aimed to where light is needed. Aim the light by having the performer stand over it as he would during the performance, then angle the light so it hits the performer on the end of the chin. Experiment with the angle to get different shadow effects on the performer's face. Use different colored lights, such as red or pink, for dramatic effect.

    Colored Clouds

    • A fog machine produces a heavy fog that hangs low on the stage. According to Limelight Productions, you can use a dry ice machine for this effect, but fluid fog will last longer. Smoke the lower part of the stage, and use lights placed on the floor on either side of the stage to light up the fog. The thicker the fog, the cooler the effect. This effect works better with LED lights because LEDS produce a softer light that works much better in fog, and LEDs can be programmed to change colors, which adds a new dimension to this effect.
