How to Create Rhythms & Beats

A rhythm is a pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the occurrence of strong and weak melodic and harmonic beats. Lead melodies and beats are then layered on top of the primary beat to add more dimension. Without a beat, a song lacks structure and direction. Moreover, learning how to create rhythms and beats is one of the first steps of composing a song.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a tempo. This can be done with a drum kit or beat-making software, or by using a metronome. Experiment with various tempo speeds. Use a tempo over 100 beats per minute for punk, heavy metal or electronica music. Use a tempo under 100 beats for rock and slower-paced songs.

    • 2

Add various percussion sounds. Use a snare, hi hat and other sounds if you have access to a drum set or beat software.

    • 3

Repeat the beat. Loop the beat if you are using software. Record the beat if you have access to a microphone and recording hardware. Play the beat over and over again until you can think of possible rhythm ideas.

    • 4

Add a bass sound layer. If you are using live instruments. it is recommended to create a rhythm on a bass guitar. If you are using beat-making software, then it is recommended to choose a tone that resembles a bass. Choose either a minor or major key depending on the mood of the song. Repeat the bass and drum loops.

    • 5

Add a rhythm sound layer. This can be a guitar, keyboard or another instrument of your choice. Create a rhythm that expands off of the bass and is in the same key.

    • 6

Add a lead sound. This is a sound that expands off of the rhythm and is the dominant sound of the beat. Begin the lead on a different note than the rhythm and bass scales to add more variety.

    • 7

Vary the structure. Slightly change the rhythm and beat for the chorus and verses. Increase or decrease the tempo of the song depending on the mood.
