What is radio active material?

Radioactive materials are substances that contain unstable atoms that undergo spontaneous decomposition, emitting ionizing radiation in the process. This decay process is known as radioactivity. Radioactive materials can be naturally occurring or human-made and can exist in various forms, including solids, liquids, or gases.

The emission of ionizing radiation from radioactive materials can involve particles such as alpha or beta particles and electromagnetic waves such as gamma rays. These emissions have the ability to ionize atoms and molecules, disrupting their chemical bonds and potentially causing damage to living tissues. This ionizing property underlies the potential hazards associated with radioactive materials.

Due to their radioactive nature, these materials require proper handling, storage, and disposal to minimize the risks of radiation exposure and its associated health effects. Strict regulations are typically in place to control the use, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
