Purchase a satellite radio subscription. There are two satellite radio providers in the United States: Sirius and XM. The two companies announced a merger in 2008, so it is possible that soon there will be only one. In any case, you can choose to subscribe on a month-to-month basis or purchase a yearly, two-year, three-year or even lifelong subscription from either company. Just go to their respective Web sites and buy an account with your credit card.

Purchase portable satellite radio equipment to use at home or at work. You can buy a stereo with a satellite radio receiver or you can even buy a small radio to take with you to the gym.

Listen to satellite radio on the internet. Just go to the Web sites of the service you have subscribed to, enter your username and password and click 'listen.' You will be able to listen to the dozens of stations offered through your computer speakers or by attaching earphones to your computer's earphone jack. You an also opt to pay an additional monthly fee to listen to the stations in better quality.

Purchase a satellite radio kit for your vehicle. Many new vehicle models offer satellite radios already built in. If yours does not, you will have to purchase a kit separately. They usually include a receiver, wires, a vehicle charger and even a remote control. They are available at most electronics stores. Some outlets even offer free professional installation. You can also choose to install the radio in your car by yourself. It is not difficult, as the radio itself can attach to your dash through a suction cup or to your air conditioning vents with clips. Follow the instructions in your manual.

Purchase an FM transmitter or, if your regular car stereo has an Line-in jack, a wire to connect your satellite radio to your car stereo. These items are usually not included in satellite radio kits. Such items will connect your satellite radio to your vehicle's speakers.

Program the channels of your choice into your satellite radio that you have installed in your vehicle. Tune the radio to the channel of your choice from the dozens offered and press on any of the numbered buttons on your radio until you hear a beep or the display flashes once. To set the number for a different channel, repeat this process after tuning your radio to a different station.
