How to Play a USB Drum Set With Software

Flexibility and sound quality are two things that many musicians look for in a product, and the drums are no exception to this rule. Modern technology has very recently given us electronic drum kits that directly plug into a PC through the USB port, and operating these kits with digital music software makes them easy to use, offers a clean, crisp sound as opposed to miking a live kit and delivers the option to change the sound of each drum with the click of a mouse.

Instructions

    • 1

Install your digital audio software. Choose a program that you are already comfortable operating or you feel may be at your experience level as a user. Popular digital music programs such as Propellerhead Reason and FL Studio as well as many others are compatible with most any USB instrument and do not require the installation of device drivers or additional software to operate. They are also prepackaged with a variety of prerecorded drum kits, so you will not have to scour the internet for or spend additional money on sample packs to use your drums.

    • 2

Assemble your USB drum kit, carefully following the included instructions on how to do so. Electronic drum kits are generally set up the same way as a live kit would be, so referencing any experience you may have with live drums will help to speed this process along.

    • 3

Plug your drum kit into one of the USB ports on your computer. It should automatically be recognized by your PC as soon as it's plugged in; if not, make sure you've properly assembled the kit and all of its components.

    • 4

Open your digital music program. Before getting too deep into choosing a drum sound or tweaking your kit, you will want to make sure the software has recognized the drums and each pad produces some sort of sound when struck. Refer to the program's help guide for instructions on how to assign your drums to it if you are not already prompted to upon opening. Once the drums and the software are synced up, feel free to go through your software's various options and create the drum sound you most desire.
