How to Convert LP Records to CD

Vinyl LP records can contain music and other audio of sentimental or even historical value. In other cases, these records may contain the music you're listening to at the moment. In any scenario, you can convert your LP records to CD by connecting to your turntable to a CD recorder. Use your personal computer and audio capturing software if you do not have a CD recorder or if you would like a digital audio file of your converted audio as well.

Instructions

  1. PC Conversion

    • 1

Connect your turntable to an audio receiver if you have not already done so. Insert one end of an RCA cable into the color-coded "Line Out" or "Audio Out" port on the turntable. Insert the other end of the same cable into the "Line In" or "Audio In" port on the receiver.

    • 2

Connect a ground wire to the turntable and audio receiver to reduce interference and noise in the audio signal. A ground cable is a thin copper wire you can purchase from a hardware or electronics store. Wrap one end of a ground wire around the turntable's ground connector, which looks like a screw near the output ports. Wrap the other end of the ground wire around the receiver's ground connector, which also looks like a screw on the back of the receiver near its input and output ports. Screw both ground connectors in to secure the ground wire.

    • 3

Connect the audio receiver to your computer. Insert the RCA end of an RCA-to-TRS cable into the receiver's "Line Out" or "Audio Out" port. Insert the TRS end of the cable into your computer sound card's "Line In" or "Audio In" port. You may instead use an RCA cable if your computer's sound card has an RCA input port.

    • 4

Download and install audio recording software if you have not already done so. Consider Audacity or Free Sound Recorder if you do not have such a program in mind. Both products are freeware.

    • 5

Load your LP record onto the turntable. Cue the LP record to your desired point of playback.

    • 6

Launch your audio recorder software. Push the "Record" button to start capturing your computer's system input.

    • 7

Push "Play" on the LP record's turntable immediately. Playing the LP record as quickly as possible minimizes silence at the beginning of your conversion's recording.

    • 8

Push "Stop" on the audio recording program when the LP's playback has completed. Save the recording as a new digital audio file in a format that is compatible with your computer's CD writer utility, such as MP3 or WAV. Select the file format from the audio recording program's "File Type" drop-down menu while saving.

    • 9

Load a blank writable CD into your CD writer drive.

    • 10

Launch your CD writer utility if it does not start automatically. Import the LP record's digital recording into your CD writer's burn list. Click "Burn" to complete the LP record's conversion to CD.
