How to Write and Mix Drum Parts Electronically

You don't need a professional drummer or an old Roland TR-808 drum machine to write great drum parts. Using modern beat-making software, you can write and mix drum parts electronically, using audio samples of real drum sounds to program any pattern imaginable. Create a kit and edit and arrange samples to write your own drum parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Download, install and open a beat-making program such as FL Studio 9, HammerHead Rhythm Station or Drumstation.

    • 2

Build a drum kit. Choose an audio sample for each piece you want in your kit. For example, if you want to build a basic rock drum kit, select samples for the snare, kick, toms, hi-hat and cymbals.

    • 3

Select the volume and pan settings for each part of your drum kit. Imagine the set-up of a real kit. For example, you might want to pan your hi-hat to the right and your ride cymbal to the left.

    • 4

Solo each audio sample and adjust its settings, starting with the kick drum. You might add a compressor to a kick drum, for example, to give it more punch, or add an EQ to boost or lower certain frequencies in the sample.

    • 5

Adjust the settings for the snare, hi-hat and the rest of the samples in your kit.

    • 6

Save your kit for future use.

    • 7

Select a speed for your drum part by adjusting the tempo function up or down.

    • 8

Click on the section of the software that allows you to program a beat or a pattern.

    • 9

Click on the buttons that correspond to each sample in your kit. For example, if there are 16 notes in your pattern, you could click on the the first, fifth, ninth and thirteenth buttons on the "Kick" sample to give your drum part a steady beat.

    • 10

Click on the option to create a new pattern and repeat step 8, changing the order and use of samples in your kit.

    • 11

Click on the part of the software that allows you to construct a full track.

    • 12

Copy and paste your drum patterns into the full track/song section, arranging it according to your desired song structure. You might paste four sections of one pattern, for example, and follow it up with four sections of another pattern, to separate a verse and the chorus.

    • 13

Apply effects such as compression and EQ to the full drum track to suit your sonic needs.

    • 14

Save your project in the beat-making program.
