How to Make Music by Inserting Chord Symbols

To create a great chord progression for a song is only the beginning. Automatically arranging simple chord progressions into songs with instrumental parts and percussion requires special music composition software. Some of the more sophisticated programs even use algorithmic composition techniques for adding instrumental solos, pre-composed bass parts and more. Two affordable programs for arranging music from a simple series of chords are Little Piano and Jammer Pro. Most programs of this type allow the user to set up a series of chords, select a style and click on a button to begin arranging the music.

Instructions

  1. A Basic Approach

    • 1

Download and install Little Piano from G.F. Software.

    • 2

Select a rhythm style or drum pattern such as blues, hip-hop or rock. There are a dozen styles from which to choose. Click on the "Drum Pattern" tab in the lower part of the program window.

    • 3

Select from major, minor or diminished chords, using your mouse. Chords are assigned to keys on your computer keyboard as indicated under the "Chords" tab in the lower part of the program window.

    • 4

Set up musical instruments by clicking on a button at the left of the program window. You can arrange up to nine instruments selected from a list of 127 standard MIDI instruments. The "Percussion" button allows you to fine-tune the drum sounds.

    • 5

Click the "Record" button at the upper right to lay down each music track. Percussion will play automatically in the style you have set up. Using the designated keys on your computer keyboard, record notes or chords for each instrument.

    • 6

Click the "Record" button again or click the "Stop" button to finish recording a track. You may undo a recording or record over a track if desired.

    More Features and Flexibility

    • 7

Download and install Jammer Pro from Soundtrek Software.

    • 8

Set up the basic structure of your song by adding measures and establishing key and time signatures. See the program user guide or "Help" menu. The default key signature the program provides is C major, with a 4/4 time signature.

    • 9

Select chords, including major, minor, seventh and diminished. You can type a separate chord for each measure of music or for each beat in a measure. Use the "Measures" view and click anywhere in a measure to insert a chord.

    • 10

Select a band style, such as blues, country, Latin or rock from the "Styles--Load Band Style" menu. There are many styles and variations of styles from which to choose.

    • 11

Set punch in and punch out measures to refine your style selection to include formal elements, including intros, grooves, breaks, pre-endings and endings. You can right-click on a measure and select punch in or punch out.

    • 12

Click the "Compose" button, identified by an icon with two eighth notes, each time you set the punch in and out measures, and Jammer Pro will automatically compose an arrangement of that part of your song. At first the program preselects all instruments, which may be changed later if you want.

    • 13

Continue the process until all sections of your song are complete.
