Install your Toneport driver. Insert the installation CD into your computer and double-click the installer. As of January 2011, the Toneport drivers are not compatible with Intel-based Macintosh computers. Line 6, the company that produces Toneport claims that compatible drivers may be available soon, so check the Line 6 website often.
Connect your Toneport to your PC. The Toneport line connects via USB, so use the provided USB cable to connect to any USB port on your computer. If using a bus-powered Toneport, such as the GX or the UX1, make sure to connect to a port directly on your computer (as opposed to a keyboard USB port or external hub), to achieve the necessary power. "Bus-powered" refers to any Toneport device that does not include an AC adapter, but receives power from your PC.
Connect your instruments to your Toneport. Some Toneport models (like the GX) will only allow you to connect one instrument at a time, while others, like the UX8, will allow you to connect multiple instruments simultaneously. Connect your instruments to the ports marked "In" or "Instruments" (depending on the model).
Open Cubase. Select your Toneport as your input device by clicking (Devices > Device Setup) on your menu bar and clicking "VST Audiobay." Under the "Master ASIO Driver" pop-down menu, select "Toneport" (it will contain the name of your particular Toneport model).
Click (Track > Add Track) on your Cubase menu bar. Select "Audio" as your track type. Appearing at the top of the main project window will be a long horizontal bar. This is the space on which you can record your instrumentation.
Press the red "Record" button on your screen and begin playing your first instrument (or instruments). If using a multi-instrument Toneport, you can record an entire band demo song in one take. If using a single-instrument Toneport, you can record your instruments one layer at a time. Just record your first instrument, create a second track (as described in the previous track) and record your second instrument on top of the first. Repeat this as many times as necessary.
