Browse electronic music samples (also known as "loops"). Commonly, DJs and artists use samplers to generate sounds for house music, but you can download royalty-free samples from the Internet using sites like Looperman, Free Loops and Loopasonic.
Download samples. For house music, try to find up-tempo beats, between 135 and 145 beats per minute (you should find the exact tempo on each loop description page), and use loops with identical tempos. Find electronic drum loops with a kick drum sound on every beat, find at least one synthesizer bass line and look for percussion fills (like hi hats and cymbals), sound effects and melody lines to supplement your beat.
Download a free multi-tracking program. Now that you have a selection of techno samples, you will need a digital audio program on which you can layer and arrange them. Many free programs exist, such as Audacity, Ardour, Linux Multimedia Studio, QTractor and Rosegarden. Download and install a multi-tracking program compatible with your computer and operating system.
Open your program and begin dragging your audio samples onto the project window (in some cases, you may need to select "File" and "Import" on your menu bar and import the samples individually). Multi-tracking programs use horizontal strips, known as "tracks," to layer parts of a song or beat on top of one another, The vertical strips will appear on your main window, with shaded regions indicating the recorded material (like bass, drums and melody). Make sure to place each sample on a separate track.
Loop your tracks. "Looping" refers to the process of repeating your samples a designated number of times. For example, if your kick drum sample covers four bars, you can click the right edge and drag it to the right, so that it repeats for 16, 32, 64 or as many bars as you desire. Just follow the timeline along the top of your project window (resembling a ruler) to determine and choose the length of each sample. Use your mouse to align and arrange each region (sample) as needed.
Export your beat. Under your "File" menu (at the top of your screen), you should find an option that reads "Export" or "Bounce." Select it with your mouse to save your house project as an MP3 or other audio file. Use the dialogue box to enter a name for your beat and choose your format.
